THE TENSIONER

The Tensioner, from a mechanical point of view, is the movable device that adjusts to provide more, or less, tension to the moving parts around it, whether it be a belt, cog, piston, or arm. Too much tension and parts wear; extremely high tension and parts break. Too little tension and parts slip and skip; extremely little tension and parts lose cohesion and/or break. The Tensioner’s job, then, is to provide the right amount of Tension (or stress) to keep the machinery operating smoothly.

This is similar to physiological theorems regarding life forms. Life requires stress: feelings of sleepiness to motivate the condition of sleep and regeneration; feelings of hunger to motivate the capture of food; feelings of survival to produce the flight-or-fight response; feelings of protection to ensure that the next generation survives. Life without stress (or tension) cannot exist on Earth as it is today, because mortal life cannot be static—it is an impossibility. Therefore, stress is a part of life, and necessary.

How one handles the stress is where the magic lies, where the divide is made between Grace and Pain. Can one pretend that nothing causes pain or heartache or suffering or regret? No. Those in a state of Grace embrace those conditions and see it as part of the feast, the gift of seeing and feeling and being with all of Creation in its many faces and moods.

Imagine an event that occurred, which in retrospect, you might have handled differently (from a state of higher consciousness and acceptance). Perhaps you still carry that anger with you, or blame. Perhaps you still feel as if you are a victim in the outcome of this occurrence. What if you made an agreement with the shadow part of your self that is angry, blaming, and playing the role of victim--that you would give them shelter while they replayed and reconsidered the conditions of the events past?

What if you took on the role of Neutral Observer, and helped your guests to determine what exactly happened in this historical occurrence, including their contribution, the contributions of others, and the possible benefits of gained knowledge? Would some of these negative emotions resolve? Would you be able to rename these shadow guests? Would they agree to adapt to a higher level of understanding within you--Re-Singing or Re-Making themselves to meet your new needs to become new role models of the idealized and larger You?

If you adjust your Tensioners so that they work to challenge you in healthy ways, with stimulating and creative motivation, rather than destructive and blaming force, you will often find that a sow's ears does indeed make a beautiful purse.

How fit are your Tensioners? Do they provide challenge without punishment? Do they provide activity without sloth? Do they provide interaction and still allow for solitude? Adjust perfectly the Tensioners of work, play, learning, and rest, and you will know the secrets of Peace in Perfect Balance.
