INCULCATION OF BELIEFS

     ~how values and beliefs are impressed upon the intellect

Inculcation is the process by which Values and Beliefs are impressed upon the intellect, usually achieved through repetition within the socio-cultural group with which one identifies. The word itself arose from Latin, originally meaning “to tread upon” or “to trample” . . . usually under foot (as “calx” is an early term for the heel of the foot).

You have heard angry people shout: “Do not tread on me.” Is this a result of being Inculcated to a certain set of values and beliefs which are being threatened?

What in your Life causes you to feel “tread upon”? If you study this situation within intellectual comparisons, do you find your viewpoint is in the right . . .

or is your viewpoint merely dogmatic?

Knowledge is not the same thing as Wisdom. Knowledge is comprised of what is taken to be fact. Wisdom is the ability to study the Knowledge, surmise its origins, and contemplate its current application. After completing that study, ask your self again: do I feel “tread upon” because my rights are endangered . . .

or is it my beliefs that are endangered?

Endangered Beliefs can lead to positive shifts, but one must let in the new information and without bias and preconceived ideas, study that information with open-minded perspective, looking for Wisdom.

We are all Inculcated with Beliefs and Values through our socio-cultural training, but we change. Be open rather than resistant. Be curious rather than closed. Be brave enough to step away from the mold into which you have been Inculcated and create for your self a new form.

You may give up an Inculcated mythology such as Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, but you need not give up the magic which gave rise to the ideas. Study your training, then look into the world, and with an open heart and mind, decide to seek the Wisdom that can break the bonds of your limitations.
