PRIVILEGE

~birth-rites versus life-rites

How was it in the family you were born into?  Do you arise from hearty, healthy people, those who are wealthy, or poor, those who are traditionalists, or adventurers?

Your Birth-Rites were given to you. Your Life-Rites will be considered and personalized. And because the world is a multi-cultural melting pot of highs and lows, if you were born into Privilege and health, some might believe you have a head start on life. This is so only to the degree that you can clearly see the world and your role in it.

While many idealize a world where individuals are equalized in terms of health, material goods, and opportunities, this has not occurred to date, nor will it likely occur in the near future. Each category of human existence provides its own opportunities for growth and advancement.

If you were born poor, do you strive to rise above the condition, or do you make peace with it and seek to lift up the community together, for the good of All? If you were born rich, do you work to identify your own purpose and maximize what good might be done with your wealth?

In either case, you must separate Birth-Rites from Life-Rites, journeying in pace with Life's constant movement, contemplating the distances between where you began and where you want to go.

Do you say: "I was born poor and have no resources to help others," or "The wealthy must do all of things I cannot."? Do you say: "The sick must take better care of themselves," or "Why should I share the resources my family has accumulated?"

In either case, you may be confusing Birth-Rites with Life-Rites. You must understand Privilege in all its guises.

Each entity has a right to Life, and each has a responsibility to communicate and co-create. This is a very difficult task for many, one that requires the ability to see the whole spectrum of Life in a non-judgmental way, beyond where Privilege ends.

As you study these ideas, think of the Birth-Rites you take for granted.

That you have air to breathe and water to drink, food, shelter, work, and play is already a miracle.

See the world, with its plants and

animals and energies as your community,

acknowledging Its Birth-Rites and Its

Life-Rites as free from Privilege as possible.

Blessed Be This Day
