COMPLICATIONS

You may believe that Complications are extra factors making something more difficult, like an original medical condition compounded upon by another, or making repairs to something with no instructions or guidance. However, in the matter of watches, a Complication is an additional function—more work for the watch maker—more features for the user.

 What if you thought of Complications in terms of extra features?

How would this change your problem-set and your options for problem-solving?

 

Falling short on money to pay your mortgage is a Complication in the finances, in your perceived emotional security, and perhaps in your lifestyle and beliefs. In the Complications of solving the problem, do you find a job that you like better, take a loan from someone who becomes a friend, or find a new skill that provides greater life satisfaction?

 A Complication does not equal failure; it does not equal life itself becoming complicated. Complications can be an arrival to a new and better hierarchy. It is a Complication when your business grows so that you must hire an employee, but that employee make give you benefits you didn’t expect. Marriage and partnership is a Complication; you must give and share and compromise. In turn, you will have someone who shares with you.

 A child is a Complication. Returning to school is a Complication. Change of any kind tends to bring Complications.

 Instead of looking at Complications as factors that impede and make challenge more difficult, can you see Complications through the lens of higher potential? Can you look at Complications as a watch maker of old, seeing the beauty in extra functions and features, that when working in harmony, bring great joy?
