 THE SOI-DISANT MYSTIC

     ~finding your own Song

Will you live your Life under your own Authority?
Or, will you let others judge you by limited external standards?
Who are you? Why are you here?

To be self-proclaimed in anything requires confidence. Whether or not that confidence has been earned is a matter of ego, as the proclamation may meet with resistance, for reasons arbitrary or justified.

Let us say you become a Soi-Disant (soi-di·sant) Mystic. What might this mean? In the study of oneself, to become self-proclaimed means that you have decided to cut out the "middle man" for your immediate learning. It means that you are listening to your inner voice . . . your actual inner voice . . . the individual, yet indivisible identity that comprises the Eternal part of your existence.

It means that you accept both the burden and the responsibility for your own growth. It means that you cannot blame what you have learned or believed before. It means you will not be limited by one set of tenets or other belief systems. It means you will forge ahead, making your own path.

It means you will try your best to be patient, loving and kind--to your self--as you engage the world as a student. And you will engage the Mystic, sometimes perplexing, and quite often, wholly beautiful things that you experience.

This is not to say that you will not or should not consider other ideas, but that you will look for clues in moving from the place you currently occupy, to the place(s) you will occupy next. It means that you will be a Seeker. You will Seek what is obscure, enigmatic, and even esoteric.

You will become a Mystic by becoming a Seeker of Mysteries. You will self-proclaim as a way to validate the seeds of Truth that are inborn to you, acknowledging that the right time to develop wisdom is the moment you decide to.

You will have teachers.
You will be a teacher.

You will Validate and Vilify according to your journey.
And forefront to all of this is your own confidence,
not of the ego type,
but of the exultant
and enterprising Higher Mind.

To know Great All you must know your self/Self.
What better way than to be the Soi-Disant Mystic,
who must wait for no other, and is ever-present?

STAR FIRE

Life burns in you as brightly as you allow.
Do not hide your Light, especially from your self.
What is possible when the Star Fire
that forged you visibly burns from your core outward?

The Elements are more than cosmic components; they are Live Sparks; progenitors. From their capable and durable expressions, Life forms. They infuse, construct, and drive the many variations of Us.

Close your eyes. Go inside. Find your Star Fire and release the governors you have placed to shield it. For a rarefied moment, consciously allow your Light to shine brightly. Do you feel your Light touching all that is? Can you hear its wordless language?

This expression of Self is the part of you that transcends all bounds. You cannot live perpetually in Its outward Grace, as it would burn you. You are here, on earth, living a mortal life—but that life is meant to be sacred at least as often as it feels profane.

You are flesh and Star Fire, and longing, and hope.

May you burn brightly and seek good ends.

 LODESTONES

In your life journey, fixed points have been set.

These thresholds will have an attractive quality, a vibration that alerts you

that attention must be paid. Roads and pathways split many times,

but fixed points navigate in only one direction, working as magnetically as a Lodestone.

You may be aware of a Lodestone that you are fast approaching, but recognizing them in retrospect is the best way to understand how a fixed point draws you in and demands that you give it attention. You see in retrospect how inevitable the fixed point was, and the signs leading up to it—signs that are calibrated to your tenets and beliefs—signs that are calibrated to your learning and motivational style.

While there are many times you will make a decision as distinct as turning right or turning left, shifting the events between fixed points, a Lodestone’s magnetism will inexorably draw you to Its horizon. You may come to a fixed point in many different ways, but the Lodestone draws you in from your current location, no matter how removed this point may seem.

Perhaps you were meant to make someone a part of your life. This meeting will be a fixed point. You may diverge after the meeting, but the meeting itself, and the meeting’s purpose, will be unavoidable. You may say no to the opportunity, and you may say yes, but being presented with the opportunity is mandatory.

Think about how you got to the exact place where you sit today. How many decisions led to this place? How many times did you accept or reject opportunities? Do you feel something unavoidable on the horizon? Is it something you dread? Is it something you must learn to accept? What works will be required of you?

Pay attention on the pathway.

Listen deeply to your Heart and to your Intuition.

They are the guides that will lead you into the deepest part of your journey.

Heart and Intuition will not sway; they will support you every step.

 EYES TO SEE

Have you eyes with which to see?  Have you ears with which to hear?  You will say yes, of course.  Even when blind and deaf, most of us believe ourselves to be of open mind; to be intelligent enough; to consider different ways of looking at things; to willingly, industriously engage things, even anomalies, in order to identify or Name a thing before deciding how we should interact with it (when possible).

 ……….

Now:  a charismatic speaker is presenting his ideas for a community center at location A.  He represents persons indigenous to location A.  He is well received.  People find him pleasant looking and accept his plans as positive.  Plans proceed, the community center services many, and the charismatic speaker moves to an area further away.

Later:  a speaker is presenting his ideas for a community center similar to one that he built in his own hometown.  He seems earnest enough, and if the information he presents is correct it might solve many issues for their own community.  Some of his ideas are a bit quaint, but perhaps some changes could be made to adapt this idea for their own community.

Thirdly:  yet another person is speaking who wants permission to build something in the community; something that will raise taxes.  He seems like a small town zealot.  Can he not see that what worked in his back woods world would not work here?  Is he looking for an easy living or large salary at their expense while he builds this magical community center for them?  They also find his physical appearance, so unlike their own, somewhat off-putting.

Lastly:  who is this man from the other side of the world, promoting this ridiculous agenda?  He looks like another species of human and has the gall to believe that civilized peoples might concern themselves with gathering under these conditions for those reasons he so values.  How utterly ridiculous they find his agenda—and the idea that the project should be funded at the taxpayers' hardworking expense.  What a charlatan.

This speaker is promoting the same agenda to different groups of people in different places.  Their lifestyles and social guidelines are different.  This is the kind of different hearing and different seeing that you would expect to see in people, based on how they value and assess things.  But, let us return to that first meeting . . .

One hundred people attend a meeting wherein a charismatic speaker is presenting his ideas for a community center.  Most of those people hear that the center will be located centrally, offer elder care, child care, medical services, educational and job opportunities, and support for those in need of financial assistance.  Most of those people recognize the speaker.

Only those opposed to or interested in elder care or child care will remember the proposed budgets for those services or the specifics related.  There are three persons in the audience needing medical care who know they can’t wait for this center to open; their minds begin to wander as they contemplate other options.  Two need dental care and are in fact having pain so intense they are having a difficult time focusing on anything in particular that is being said.

Seven have come to the meeting in a status of unemployment, hoping to obtain details about the community center and secure a job in its construction.  One is a nurse wanting to someday work closer to home.  Ten are mothers; two who want to work in daycare and eight who need daycare closer to home—they listen, but are distracted by their pressing, personal needs.

An elderly couple in the audience owns the land proposed for the community center.  The man has recently discovered that he has terminal cancer and hopes to sell the land while there is still time to seek treatment in a large medical center far from home.  Three rows back, a woman sits enraptured by the speaker, having been in love with him for most of her life; his words blur as she enjoys merely being in the room with him.

If interviewed upon leaving this meeting, you would receive very different accounts with very different emphases on matters pertinent to each speaker, about how the agenda was handled.  This is so in life.  We all have materia prima in our dialogue and outlook.  What is important to us?  What matters most highly?

Yes.  Our beliefs color our senses.  Our senses are trained by our beliefs.  Do you think this isn’t true?  Go to a tanner’s or a perfumery, or merely a restaurant where the smells that are so overwhelming to you, have virtually disappeared to the workers.  The cacophony at the factory?  How long did it take to become a background hum?  When was the last time you beheld a cloud in the blue sky and stopped, amazed by what your eyes were seeing—truly?

We cannot go about in a state of constant excitation.  We cannot behold the minutia of life with thrall.  Madness would set upon us.  We must filter.  Therefore, we must habituate.  The question is:  how do we habituate, and to what level, under which guidelines and what beliefs?  Study this idea for yourself.

You have eyes with which to see.  What are their filters?

MENTORSHIP
            ~using experience as a bridge

Whether your knowledge began with a book-based system,
or something derived from trial and error—or a combination of the two—you are in
a position to share your skills, and to Mentor others.

This knowledge need not be something society considers of high value--because all knowledge can be important and practical if it is what you need in the moment.

In this way, each of us is a teacher, just as we continue to be students. Through your behavior, conversation, and even body language, you are teaching. Those around you are measuring your response to things, and whether by embracing your methods, or consciously avoiding your methods, you are teaching.

When you intentionally Mentor someone, you are going far beyond mere teaching. You are embracing the whole of a person, looking at the big picture. You may be a ski instructor—and you will not stop at technique. You will teach your apprentice to tonify the body with diet, strengthening, stretching, and visualization techniques. You will teach them to study the mountain and the weather, and advise them in choosing their equipment.

As Mentor, you become part of their life. You were trained to do this—first as being a child. Whether or not you enjoyed an upbringing of two adults, one adult, or a tribe, your family may or not be blood related. They may have had a primarily negative, or positive influence on your life skills, your tenets, and your beliefs.

Think of all the things you learned
to do as a child—in the first year--by age 3, age 6, age 15.
You have learned much. And, you have taught much.

If you are particularly skilled, is it not a glorious thing to teach those who will follow you and carry the same torch? If you have
had Mentors, you know how beneficial it can be.

So, today we urge you to look into your toolbox. What is it that you are uniquely qualified to do? What is the tenor of your voice? And how can you change the world by sharing what you know with another, who can grow these talents even higher by beginning on the scaffold that you help them build?

 BEHIND

            ~calming tomorrow’s worries

“I am Behind,” you say. Behind what? Behind whom? Do you see your self standing in the shadow of the Great Tomorrow, promising that you will fall short?

Are you Behind in chores? Learning? Financial Security? Acceptance? Purpose? How do you believe that you are Behind?

Consider your history. Have you ever felt Not-Behind? You will find this is a rare and brief occurrence, if it occurs at all. There is no way to be Not-Behind with your crops, not when after the seed is planted, they must have time to grow and nourish. There is no way to be Not-Behind on making tomorrow morning’s bed, for tonight, you will sleep in it.

So, when you believe that you are Behind, how exactly do you report upon your current condition? Have you procrastinated or avoided something that needs attention? Did Fear cause you to turn away from a responsibility, or to refuse an opportunity? To believe perpetually that you are Behind causes you to experience a chronic level of tension and anxiety.

Could you function in a more serene and efficient state if you dedicated each day to addressing what was most important? Can you be satisfied by worthwhile and genuine efforts? Can you surrender when your plans to accomplish a certain inventory falls short?

Be reasonable. Be direct. Be honest. Measure your tasks and accomplishments by standards that are real and pertinent. You will worry less about Tomorrow’s appointments, if today you labor with love and ease. You will calm Tomorrow’s worries and each day, celebrate your aliveness by living in the moment rather than just beyond.

 TIME AND DISTANCE

     ~the training of perception

Time and Distance are closer concepts than you believe. Just as you may determine the point between two Distances in measures of Time, you may determine the point between two Times in measures of Distance.

            Time------------------------------------Time  = Distance
            Distance----------------------------Distance  = Time

The concepts that you accept, expound upon, teach, and understand in different ways during your lives are of necessity, taught around the construct of words and word units.

Therefore, many of these concepts overlap, contradict, and share some redundancies. The definitions of these concepts also vary according to era, culture, and socio-economic subcultures and hierarchies.

For instance: the distance between point A and point B is felt to be much greater when traveled by foot, less by horse, even less by car, and respectably less by airplane. How much less does that same distance seem when the travel between A and B becomes instantaneous—when your atoms may be moved from the first point to the second without noticeable delay?

You may argue that the distance has not changed, but that it is the speed which has changed, yet maybe this is a matter of words and concepts and overlapping constructs and contradictions. Yes?

How does this same example change the construct of time? Traveling from point A to point B on foot consumes more linear time than traveling that distance by horse or by car or by airplane. Moving the compressed and cohesive form of the body-in-total from A to B instantaneously requires no linear time at all—so how much time does it take?

Quite often, when you are judging Time and Distance, you are doing so according to the markers in your body and in your life, that indicate change. You say to yourself: “Since I left point A, how much change has occurred since I arrived at point B?”

If you have been making the journey by foot, substantial change has occurred. You have seen much on this journey, even if that was not your intention. You have had many opportunities to think and experience and to interact with your environment. As the window of change and experience from A to B shortens, the change is reduced. You are less changed.

This is the significant reason that when you have a “Life-Changing” experience, that is, an experience which changes you ‘in the blink of an eye,’ you feel a great leap ahead. You jump from A to B with a sudden thrust, arriving at B with your changes whole, having never felt their slow turning, and the typical smorgasbord of choices that is usually required to seat them.

Invite into your life all modes of travel and all methods of moving from A to B.
As long as you embrace the importance of travel itself,
keeping yesterday’s horizon behind you and tomorrow’s ahead,
you can always be assured that you are moving towards B.

And once you reach B, it will become your new A,
and the sun will rise again.
