BALANCING
There are specific trials which endanger the soul. Among these are self-illusion grandeur, obsession and entitlement. Look closely at your life: where do these conditions exist? If you have arranged your life so that material objects influence you, whether or not they are present, then you have constructed a life which spiritually, will be lacking.
To express oneself is a beautiful thing. Can you do this with might and clarity, or do you feel the need to have empty articles around you in order to feel whole? Yes, you can have both articles and wisdom. You can live in an embellished house and have nonattachment. But, beware that to control your life, you must also control the things you invite into your world, and not let material objects control you.
Take inventory today of the influences in your life, and consider how much influence each thing has.
We will save the influence of people for another time. Day by day we will look at these things and contemplate our relationship with them. Some things to think about are universal, whether you consider yourself to be blessed or poor in these categories: food, shelter, tools, conveyances, and luxuries.
Most persons reading this will have abundance in more than one of these categories. Do the items in these categories serve you . . . or are you serving these objects? Do these objects make your life easier, or do they lure you to spend time and energy away from what might be more important, more life-affirming, or more celebratory?
Do you use the ‘possession’ of these objects to make excuses for destructive or ‘deadening’ habits: overeating and food punishment; overextension of housing expenditures in time, money, energy, and attention; absorption and contemplation with tools that support the manufacture of more empty goods rather than spirit-affirming goods; conveyances that inflate ego rather than serve a main intent; and luxuries . . . a broad category.
Let us refrain from preaching. That is not our intent. We desire to bring awareness to where your energies lie in your life. What all peoples have in common while in mortal incarnation is a limit of time and energy to spend. Wise use of these assets gives life room for greater joy.
